I'm Patrick McKenzie (patio11). I make and sell software. Ask me anything.
Howdy guys. Dharmesh generously invited me to do an AMA here.
I'm Patrick McKenzie. Briefly, I run a small software company (Kalzumeus Software) which sells a pair of SaaS applications. I'm an engineer by training but figured out a bit about this whole marketing thing, too, because nobody else was going to do it if I didn't. For the last couple of years I've done occasional consulting with mostly B2B SaaS companies on how to sell more software. My shtick, such that it is, is usually applying engineering practices to influence marketing/sales outcomes.
You can feel free to ask me just about anything. Tactically speaking, you might ask questions about SEO, AdWords, conversion rate optimization and A/B testing, and email marketing. I'd probably have the most useful advice for you with regards to the last two. I've got a bit of experience in companies from the tiniest imaginable to big Fortune 500 ones (which will remain nameless).
I also write quite a bit about professional opportunities for people in our space, particularly for folks who want to crosstrain in marketing and development. (Do it! Fun and incredibly lucrative!)
Also of occasional relevance: I've lived my entire adult life in Japan, so if you want to hear excellent reasons why working in a Japanese megacorp should not be in your career plans, I have scads. (And, perhaps, a bit of insight for those of you who want to sell stuff here.)
Oh, a bit of administrivia: I'll be actively answering questions from at least 11 AM EST on Wednesday for 90 minutes, or until either you drop or I drop. I like to write big meaty responses rather than spit takes, so if you can get your questions in early, that would be great. Thanks much for coming.
