Hi. I recently started a new fan page for a client of mine, a luxury resort in Elounda, Greece. I was wondering if any of you had any experience with the travel industry and Facebook or what type of content is "good" content for facebook in general? Is it Photos and Videos? Is it special offers (I doubt it)? How can I make people interact with my page without being intrusive and aggressive on their news feed?

I started by posting a video which did pretty well. Then I started a poll on which of 3 photos to use for our homepage but didn't seem to work that well?

I've been struggling on what type of content I as a user would expect by a Resort fan page...

As a user I hate people who join social media just to promote their business. I don't want my page to become one of these spam pages that noone cares about.

One thing I would do in terms of getting fans is to encourage prior customers of the resort to become a fan. Perhaps a small notecard in the room.

This way, word spreads slowly amongst the connections of those people that have visited the resort (and liked it enough to join the fan page).

Other content that might be interesting is "insider" info for visitors to the area (restaurants, tours, etc.) If it's a relatively niche market, there's a chance that not that much content is out there.

On a related note, my first inclination would be to put this kind of content up on a blog or the main website -- instead of on Facebook. I still think more people are apt to search Google and browse content on a regular website than within Facebook. The power of Facebook is the viral aspect and the interaction (discussions and other social features). Just publishing content is sub-optimal on Facebook, as it stands.

As a resort researcher, e.g. when reseaching a vacation, I love pictures. It's literally true that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Videos are good too, but they tend to be low-quality. If you have nice, high quality video, by all means, please share it.

Best of all are guest pictures. Allow your guests to upload pictures to your site, and share them without censoring. What you gain from authenticity and transparency outweighs the risks. TripAdvisor does this very well, with guest pictures of nearly every hotel. I love that.

Another way to do this is pick some tag, and ask your visitors to use this tag if they upload pictures to Flickr or similar sites. That way you, as the resort owner (or working on behalf of the owner), can look for those pictures across the web and aggregate them into galleries.
