I don't write my content for Search Engines. I give priority to my readers and write in a way that they will stick to my blog once they read an article from me. So, I'm not really optimizing my contents for Search Engines and my main source of traffic is from Social Media.
It's a great way to reach out for more targeted audience and those people will probably turn into your loyal readers for sure.
I understand what you mean but there is no either/or. There is only social search. Social Media and search are intertwined to such an extent that you can not say anymore that your traffic is only search or social. BTW. there is only search traffic not "SEO traffic". SEO is the process of optimization for search engines and search users.
That's the perfect answer I've heard so far Tad. Congo and thanks a lot.
Amal Rafeeq is absolutely right. Now a days trend has changed, it's to write something useful for users/readers not just for search engines. You will surely get more success by gaining loyal readers and a strong social media fan base will also build.
Hi mate.Glad to hear that. Exactly, to survive these days, you must give priority to your readers for sure.
Thanks for commenting.
I agree with you Amal. Writing for people (social media) is a nice practice. There are some advantages in this.
1. You can develop interaction with real people and may get ideas for your next blog post.
2. Social media traffic comes like a flood. You can get huge traffic in very little time.
3. If you begin writing for people, search engines automatically follow you.
4. While writing, if you create some keywords, Google will certainly sends you traffic.
For instance, Brian Dean of Backlinko.com invented a term "skyscraper technique". It is not a keyword that existed before.
He wrote it for readers. Now Google caught it and any one searches for that term, "Backlinko" comes first in the results.
Social Media, in this order: Facebook, Linkedin and Google Plus. Word of advice: Google Plus Communities & Linkedin Groups are underestimated. :)
I've heard that Twitter doesn't work for everyone. Unfortunately for him too.
I was just curious as to the reason more than anything :-)
Hehe, got that.
Finally, someone who's up with Social Media. I was not giving time to Linkedin groups. Are they really worth it please? Thanks..
Yeah, for me it's SEO also.
May your beliefs help you :) Good luck.
What why, how people get organic traffic? It's because they've good rankings at Google and other SE. Simple!
It depends on the niche. Social media is best for blogging related niche, but never forget totally SEO. SEO is the better than Social media for many other niches like technology.
You are right, it depends. And yeah, I too believe Social Media is best for blogging and internet marketing related niche.
But even if you target search engine traffic for tech niches, you are not actually writing for people but for search engines. So I think, still I'll be sticking on to Social media.
No Zion. Read techcruch or mashable blog post very carefully. They also write post for both readers and search engines. If we forget SEO, it is very hard to create successful technology blog.
I agree that they've said it. But everyone have their own reasons for believing in something. Right? :)And that's why I've reasonably said I Believe so.
I don't say forget social media or forget readers. What I say is write for both search engines and readers. Otherwise it is very hard to drive traffic for TECH blogs,
After getting enough traffic from search engine, then you can write for only readers. Because Google knows your blog. So even though you don't care SEO very much Google will find your blog posts.
We have to write for readers at the beginning also if our niche is blogging related. Even though your niche is blogging don't forget SEO totaly, But there is no doubt that readers are important than search engines for blogging niche. That doesn't mean that totally forget SEO. Write for readers, and add seo techniques that doesn't disturb for readers.
I didn't mean any argument mate. In the end, I do wanna agree with you on writing for readers and optimizing the content.
I also don't want to go argument bro. This is about only knowledge sharing. If any one read all discussion in this article, he/she can learn many things. :-)
I hope so too Ranuka. Thanks for being here :) See you around.
Depends on the niche, I have sites which do well in SEO and I have sites that do very well for Social.
That's something I should agree to. But consider you're blogging on a niche that have a hell lot of Search rate on the engines and related active users on Social Media at the same time.
To what will you give more priority then please? Thanks.
Well I have worked in the - Funny websites niche, they do very well on social, I have also worked in fashion and other goods targeted to a female demographic, they do well.
Further to this I worked in other niches like Enterprise hosting, B2B focus niches they do not do as well on social media only Linkedin possibly.
Well, thanks for sharing your experience with us James.
SEO is the main source of traffic. You can't depend on Social media only.
But you can't depend on SEO only too. Right?
Yeah but SEO if done appropriately can give you better results than social media..
Think from the other side too mate. Something done appropriately can give you better results. What if it's Social Media where active users engage? And unlike in Organic Traffic, they don't bounce away after accessing the information they need.
I don't agree that organic visitors bounce away, it will only gonna happen when you don't have content which they were looking for. I have an automobile blog where organic visitors spend hours in comparing and reading specs of various cars.
You can't compare organic traffic with social traffic. Do a case study, build a site by following seo rules and build social presence for another site. You will see the difference by yourself. If you want to grow your blog/site seo is must...
Think about it Tarun,
Most of the organic visitors are those who search for a quick solution and after it's gained, they tend to mind their on business.
But Yeah, in some cases like a comparison blog, it works too. Maybe Search Traffic and Social Media traffic is meant for different niches too.
Don't agree with you brother. Search traffic is the best source each and every niche.
Not every source bro. What about for those which people don't Search For? :) SE and SM has equal importance in the relevant world. Right?
Mine is SEO.. SEO is the best way to bring organic traffic to niche. For any niche first SEO is important on-page optimization then we can go for futher SEO work or SMM work.
SEO is the one and only way to bring organic traffic. Not the best way. And I can't agree with you Sara, SEO is doesn't work for any niches. There are topics which we should reach out for more audience directly through social media. Like a topic about which people don't search for but still would love to read it.
According to Alexa, my main soruce of traffic is Social media. But, I always like to write content for search engines.
For my blog it's about 50/50 these days, but social used to provide more. I'd publish a post, then share via Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+. But now that some of my posts rank well in Google of their own accord, it's an even balance. It's taken years though... my organic traffic graph in Analytics looks a bit like the one Rand sometimes shares of Geraldine's Analytics (@everywhereist), where it gradually grows and grows over the years... :-)
Hi Steve, thanks for being a part of the discussion.I'm happy to hear that you're doing well in blogging. Since your posts are taking too much time to rank as you say so, I think you must work on your Google+ profile authorship and try to get more people to follow you. You should also keep in mind that the Social Signals also play a vital role in rankings these days. You can use JustRetweet.com to get more targeted audience to like, retweet and G+ your content.
Good luck :)
Definitely. I think authorship (rel="author") has helped in terms of click-through rate - I've checked some of the keywords I've been found for and I'm not even in the top positions for some of them. I need to work more on G+ though - I'm addicted to Twitter but it hasn't quite rubbed off on G+ (yet)! :-)
Whoa! I'm really into Twitter too.
Do you agree that getting more Social Shares to your content helps in better ranking? What do you say?
It's... debatable ;-) I can't see how it wouldn't be, but it depends on whether or not Google's figured out how best to incorporate it into the algorithm.
There was a good Google+ Hangout discussion about it last night if you're interested: http://www.maxminzer.com/social-media-and-seo-blend-with-eric-enge/ :-)
So, Mystery it is. Right? :)
I'll dive into that link. Thanks Steve.
My blog receives 80% of the traffic from Pinterest!
That's great Amanda. Traffic from Pinterest is always worth it and I think you should also work on being active on Google+ and Twitter too. Best of luck.
I prefer SEO first and SMO after that.
SEO helps to get ranking in search results that brings us organic traffic, that traffic (readers) like and share our content that gives our content more social exposure. Hence higher ranking in search results :)
Duh! SEO IS Ranking in Search Engines. How else it could help?
My main source of traffic is from Google Organic visits after that it's referrals from communities I engage with (Inbound, Traffic Planet and other SEO related forums I'm apart of) Social media is actually sitting at 4th after my guest post referrals.
Hi Charles, Thanks for sharing your traffic sources with us. And I'm hearing about Traffic Planet for the first time. Thanks a lot for that too :)
Np, I use it a lot.. I did an income report with all my forums/communities I'm on here:
I'll dive into that report for sure.
I'm not really into forums and the actual reason is that I don't really know how to make use of them. Can you gimme some tips to drive traffic to blogs please?
SEO is the priority. But when blog is new, we can't expect organic traffic, so for that Social Media sharing gives us some good traffic which is not constant. I mean we have to share the content virally in all social media sites and groups.
But for the long run, it is always SEO which will help us. So it is always SEO which wins compared to Social Media.
Yeah, Social Media for a kick start and Search Engines for keeping up. That works.
Thanks for speaking out your points Shathyan.
My 60% of traffic is from search engines, I just believe only one thing just go for "quality content" Reader and Google loves it most. But the important point comes here is to make your reader stick to your Blog, and here wheres the social media works :)
But quality content doesn't alone gets you results mate. That's just an old saying. You gotta go outside the box to grab some attention first. Right?
Social media is booming all around the world recently and it also become the easiest medium to reach out our customers. But traffic generating via social media would be pretty unstable. So the integration of both SEO and social media give as better and stable traffic.
If you ask me to choose either one, I will go with SEO :)
Social media and the search engines are closely intertwined. At this stage I don't think you can add the word or between social media and search engines. There's that plus social media signals are now considered as ranking factors.
Well said Spook. Thanks for that :) Stay around.
Mostly SEO, but the traffic from Social Media is significant too. Still consider it to be a valuable addition rather than the primary source.
I also suspect that it may be due to the techniques people choose to promote themselves on social media.
There's still a general truth for me: I've never seen a mediocre site with an outstanding SMM strategy. I guess these two things come together and enable you to evolve in both directions more or less simultaneously.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Yeps, both are significant.
I agree with your concept. Totally :)
For me, different keywords produce a different dominant channel for traffic. I think they're just different channels, both of which should be managed to drive visibility.
You saying that different keywords are you different channels? They are all just from Search Engines, right?
Hi, Zion,Writing for our reader is good one because readers know where to stick and where don't.It is good get referral traffic. these traffic will turn into your regular reader. Thank You
Glad someone finally agreed. Good luck :) Thanks for commenting.
By establishing Goals in Google Analytics you can discover which traffic sources have higher conversion rates. Since I'm not selling my own products at the moment, my Goals are based around growing an engaged email list and getting more friends, followers and subscribers on my YouTube channel, podcast and social media networks. So even though I get more traffic from Google organic search, most of the traffic doesn't convert at the rate the other traffic does. For example, the highest rate of conversion for my main blog comes from people who listen to my podcast on my secondary blog. Traffic from Scoop.it and YouTube also have higher conversion rates than traffic from Google.
Therefore, while getting traffic from Google might come easy by using some simple SEO strategies, I'm finding that traffic is overrated from my point of view.
I'm also the Admin for the Google Analytics account for an eCommerce site and in that case the conversion rate from Google search traffic is higher.
Bottom line - make sure you are using Goals in Google Analytics and track conversions not just visits and bounce rates.
Thanks for sharing your experience mam.
Roger that :)
For now social media...
What sites do you use Constantin?
Social Media for now? I didn't get you!
SEO, I prefer.
Both are important to me and I'm getting traffic from both these sources. Some of my posts are tech related and some other are blogging tips. And I create my posts for search engine as well as readers too.
Mine is major from organic and little from Social media. Wanna improve some social presence, trying for the same. Have to learn to get traffic from Triberr, am missing it.
I am very active on Facebook and Twitter these are the main source of my traffic, I rarely focus on SEO but that is an important thing..
Yeah Nishant, you're killing it there on Facebook. I'm seeing you all over there. Keep that up. About how much % of traffic are you receiving from Search engines please? Thanks.
55% traffic from SE rest from Social Media
That's a fine ration. Thanks for sharing mate.
Both !!!! SEO is always helping me to obtain traffic and may be social media is helping me to go straight to the prospects that i want.
According to me, results with Social media are more immediate. SeoSeo results will be on the longterm. So create a lot of content optimized for search engine and push it very very often on social media!
SMO is fastest way for getting traffic but it's traffic type is instant
Today I share one article on Social Network website so I got around 5000 visitors for only 2 to 3 days then slowly graph goes down. So it's like instant traffic.
But our article get better rank into S.E so we can get long term traffic that's is SEO.
