There is no glamourous story behind Social Crawlytics, it was a simple idea that came to me during weekend. I looked around and no one had done it so I brought it to life.
I was looking for an app/product idea to experiment some marketing tactics, by that I mean marketing with zero budget, that was the inspiration.

I haven't spent a penny on marketing and within just a few months I managed to get over 15,000 users, the vast majority of which are regular users. I am really pleased with that because making a product is the easy part in most cases, its the marketing side of things that is usually the hard part.

What's the story behind Social Crawlytics? How did it come about? What inspired you to build it?

I am also thinking about building and releasing a couple of WordPress plugins. I like to build a few conversion optimisation tools, in particular I know of a service that charges up to $2000 a month and I am confident I can provide the community with a free alternative.
I think your tool is awesome. I always recommend it as part of a content audit / brainstorming session. What do you feel are the best uses of your tool. What do you feel people should be getting from it.
Just to say, I am not sure it's a great idea to start one of these yourself, no offense meant, but it's kind of confusing for regular members who attended the other sessions.
Interesting uses that I have seen so far are:
1. Competitor Audit
2. Outreach (Using Most Shared Authors)
3. Brainstorming content strategy
4. Finding the influencers that share your competitors content
You are referring to starting an AMA? Is it reserved for certain users? If that is the case, I wasn't aware.
SC seems like a popular tool, is it expensive to run/host?
Do you have a roadmap for new features? If so, what's on it?!
It is relatively costly particularly when it gets a surge of reports. At times SC processes in excess of 1 million URLs in less than an hour which means that is very intensive.
The moment SC detects a spike, it auto launches new Amazon EC2 instance(s) and spawns several dozen workers until the surge is over and then kills the auto launched servers - this mechanism saves me some money. However, if a spike lasts for extended number of hours then the Amazon bill wouldn't be cheap.
I don't have a roadmap as such, but I do have some ideas that could improve the service i.e. integrating link metrics. That said, I don't have to have too many features, I like simple apps that are a good at one of two things.
Hi Yousaf - can you give us an idea of the split of share of use of social crawlytics between agency and inhouse? Is it 80% agency&freelance ? And if you don't want to say, do you know that yourself?
That is a good question and in all honesty I have not looked into it myself. SC has around 15,000 users now and I can see big brands, agencies and individuals.
Now that you have raised the question, I will have to look into this :)
