I really like the content on Inbound.org, but my one gripe is that the homepage holds on to content too long. As a almost daily visitor, I'd love to see articles fall off the hottest section after 24 hours or so similar to the HackerNews algorithm. Am I the only one that feels this way?
I'd be in favor of trying a slightly faster decaying points algorithm. Good suggestion!
agreed on faster decaying but just increase the curve of decaying, I think the top articles are fine but the bottom ones could be replaced with fresher stuff. Although I'd be soft on that tweak. You also want to keep the opportunity for truly amazing content to stay there for a week.
I don't think there is a need for this due to the "Incoming" section. It's nice to see what articles truly are the "hottest" and if they are hot for a few days then so be it, it gives those truly good articles a chance to be read by those who don't visit everyday. The "Incoming" section is full of awesome gems that many just skip over. It's also different almost every hour!
Yes, it seems somewhat recent that posts are "holding" more. +1 for improving freshness.
Also +1. The old algo felt too fast. The current one feels better, but doesn't refresh enough to my taste. SEOmoz has a "top post" sidebar widget that shows the most popular articles over the past 2 weeks. There are also links to see the top post in the past month, 3 months, year and all time. Something similar on Inbound would be awesome.
In addition to Cyrus's on-page suggestions, I'm a big fan of email digests. That way, you can get caught up on the posts that you're worried you missed (for those who don't visit the site every day). Being able to pick between a daily, weekly, or monthly summary would be awesome.
I've mentioned the email digest to the dev team in the past - I'm sure they're in the pipe for the far future after all the other cool site features are implemented. B)
