"We're not afraid of what we don't know." Damn. Right. Learn new stuff. If you have intellectual curiosity, you're set for life.
Spot-on. Intellectual curiosity is the antidote to the epistemic closure I mentioned earlier this week.
I thought this represented a valuable perspective on how we think about failure and, especially, the fear of failure. I know that fear has inhibited me from acting in the past and my customers, clients, and partners have suffered because of my failure to act.
But this is a new perspective that celebrates failure, which I think helps get more done. Links up really well with the Agile development/marketing perspective, too.
Wish I was this smart at 22! :)
There is no such thing as failure, only feedback. I learned this from reading Anthony Robbin's book, "Awaken the Giant Within" and I would definitely recommend it. It is labeled as a "self help" book, which carries a negative connotation sadly because people don't want to think that they need help. It really just helps embrace your qualities, not fear rejection or failure and to embrace what you believe in. He is also a major NLP practitioner which I recommend studying that as well but he speaks about it very thoroughly. NLP is a behavior psychology practice that can work wonders for personal reasons and in marketing! I'd definitely recommend it! I agree that it lines up very well with the agile mentality. Agile marketing and development is probably one of my favorite things about my generation's experience with the web. I get to study all of the patterns of past successes but the fact is that most of the tactics of the past wont stand up now with current tactics. The difference is that we can take the things that did work and adapt them to this agile mentality and make something outstanding.
Dude, Luke, I can totally relate to what you're saying... We're da crazy ones :)
Excellent article. I like that he admits to failure and acknowledges sometimes it happens but that you can not fear it.
