True. I feel like I've been seeing the same content marketing tips all over, with nothing radical that encompasses a definition for beginners. Guess it's time for a "what is?" post. I remember a few years ago people talking about hubs (twitter, facebook, youtube) that lead back to your blog. Maybe we're just centralizing those strategies with "content marketing"?
Amen on this one. "content marketing," like "inbound marketing," is just another way of defining "good marketing." Inbound, content, etc. aren't separate disciplines or miraculous new tactics. They're semantic twists on things that have been sound marketing practices for decades. Read Seth Godin. Hell, read John Caples. You'll hear the same themes: Tell a great story; test; repeat.
Wait. I just dissed the term 'inbound marketing' on inbound.org. Am I going to implode?...
I tend to agree with you. On the other hand content marketing is
not just blogging and the other things we used to do to get traffic.
Also most bloggers are not professionals and do not market anything.
Most bloggers and SEOs embracing content marketing or rather content
strategy as a whole underestimate what it entails, content marketing is
all kinds of things beyond blogging and SEO most of us can't do by
themselves. Even infographics require whole teams. Large companies do
content markertng a print level here in Germany, I get a printed
magazine almost from every brand.
