Content Curation is More Than Mindlessly Sharing Links
Nov 14 2012
Totally agree with the main point here. "Top X" lists are overdone, and curation becomes just another tactic. On the other hand, it can be done right if you're in tune with what people on the web are craving at any moment. Not saying I'm good at this by any stretch, but focusing on listening to what people want can be far more powerful than just amassing a huge list of links arbitrarily.
One personal example is the list of rank checkers post I did ~9-10 months ago. Only reason I made it was because nothing like it existed, but more importantly when I asked folks on Twitter and G+ about it the reaction was so massive it was clear people wanted that kind of information.
Can save tons of time if you can quickly test public interest with a tweet before creating the content!

Yeah, I did a lot of lists myself over the years and some were a huge success while others remained almost unnoticed despite having a similar structure etc. Sometimes listing many items is just not useful while in other cases it offers choices.

I am in agreement here that lists are overdone. however they do provide value in that they at least keep the article brief. When I see anything over top 12, I don't open the link unless I know and respect the author.
