Sorry for not answering the question. There are just no tools you must have IMHO. You must rely on your expertise first and foremost. Tools come and go. Different clients use different tools so that you have to adapt. For each tool out there there are some alternatives. depending on the task you may want to use a different one. Until last week many people would have said Google Reader was a must have tool.
That's alright! I think process was most important to everyone I asked and I can definitely see why. The top answers were Wordpress, Excel and Google Analytics, and I imagine most people left out their email clients :) It's probably nice for people to see that it's not all in the tools.
The next posts I'd like to do will get deeper into process I think.
