That's good thinking, let's set that up! Happy to do either.
I'm aware of that approach, but boy do I hate it :) At least the write an ebook path I dislike in most cases. Other approaches like an open source app/project or some kind of utility that grows into a software product I suppose are more reasonable starting places these days.
When we started out (me and Patrick both started our businesses around the same time, 10ish years ago and we have known each other since then) it was difficult to get initial traction, but for the determined person still possible.
For a variety of reasons that don't need to be hashed out here I think it's much harder to start a SaaS based company than starting a software company was when we did. Given that (let's just call it given for the sake of argument) do you see any businesses that are ripe for small co's to move into in the coming years where the inherent problems with SaaS for a small team are absent or minimized?
I generally will reply with a thanks for applying kind of message, though when I was at previous jobs with huge numbers of resumes to go through I didn't. It's just too much time to reply to each.

Of course, anyone I had interviewed I'd let know.
