My understanding is that your idea of SEO is based on what the agency you worked for were doing...which IS gaming the search engines.
No wonder why the term "SEO" has this bad reputation. Many omit to mention "gray" or "black" hat in their services...
> "we worked on creating good content"
Then you're not only doing SEO, you're building their business...
