When you say "... be more thoughtful when you mark something with rich snippets," do you mean that even if you have content that definitely fits into schema, you should consider not marking it up if it seems somewhat extraneous? Or do you mean consider not marking up content that dubiously fits into schema? Other?

No, this is nothing mind-blowing, but it's worded well. Personally, it drove home the point that I need to nail down my pitch to persuade clients to consider an SEO's opinion an integral part of the decision making process for broader marketing initiatives.
